BRISBANE, FEBRUARY 2003

The third seminar and grading for the 2002/2003 year will be held by the Queensland Kendo Renmei Inc. in Brisbane on the weekend of Saturday 8 February and Sunday 9 February 2003.

The venue for this seminar and grading is as follows:
Saturday:	Clairvaux/Mackillop College
		Main Gym / Auditorium
                Klumpp Road
                UPPER MOUNT GRAVATT QLD 4122

Sunday: Campbell Centre
                Anglican Church Grammar School
                Oaklands Parade
                EAST BRISBANE QLD 4169

The seminar will cover mainly Kendo but also Iaido. A programme is attached.

The cost of this weekend will depend on the numbers attending but should be in the order of $20-25 dollars, which covers hall hire for both venues for the weekend. Meals etc will be extra (about $5.00 each day)

The Grading will be available on this occasion for Kendo only to shodan.

Please note the grading on this occasion will be held on Sunday afternoon to enable extra training to be held. The grading should be completed by 3:00 pm.

Details of grading fees payable will be available on the day. Candidates are reminded that only those persons with current membership of the QKR will be permitted to attempt a grading on Sunday. All candidates should be in attendance by 9:00 am Sunday morning for the morning training sessions.

Candidates for the grading should also endeavour to attend the Saturday sessions, as matters covered will have a direct bearing on the grading.

Please note that accommodation is not available at either venue. Separate arrangements will have to be made.

On behalf of the QKR executive I thank you for your participation in these events in the past, and hope to see you at this seminar.

SEMINAR TIMETABLE:
Kendo.

As with previous years, the focus of this seminar will be on shiai, in preparation for the Australian Championships to be held in Sydney at Easter. Anyone wishing to compete at the Championships should endeavour to attend this seminar.

The actual sequence of practices and the lesson structure will depend on the number of people attending, however the following topics should be covered:

Shiai rules and regulations
Shimpan – role and responsibilities
Psychological aspects – mental preparation, focus and zanshin during matches.
Shiai practice. With the class being split into two groups, each instructed by a sensei. Matches will commence and continue, with instruction from sensei throughout each match.
Tachikiri-geiko – where one person fights a number of bouts consecutively.
Enjin-geiko – where the class forms a circle with two kendoka in the centre, with the winner remaining – one point matches are played without a break.
Shimpan practice – for senior students, practice in the judging and regulation of matches.
Shiai – competition between a red and white team, selected from the class by sensei (to include all class participants)
It will also likely include components of Kihon & waza practice, uchikomi & Kakari-geiko, and Ji-geiko.

Iaido.

As the recent AKR seminar on the Gold Coast focussed heavily on Iaido, the amount of Iaido in this seminar is reduced. People wishing to train in iai are welcome to do so, with Sunday morning being set aside for Iaido training, to run concurrently with the kendo class.
